Do I need to live close by in order to work with you?
Thanks to Skype and FaceTime, I can conduct interviews with you wherever you are. For the technology-averse, I’m happy to use the phone. Ideally, we will have at least one in-person meeting, especially for a memoir project. My travel expenses would be included in the agreed-upon cost of my services. I am located in Southern California.
What is the difference between a memoir and an autobiography?
Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, a memoir refers to a collection of memories from a person’s life. An autobiography suggests a more comprehensive account of a life from birth. I find that life stories told by the subject typically fall into the category of memoir, but if an autobiography is more appealing to you, we can do that. The content of our interviews will determine which category your book falls into. Ultimately, calling your book a memoir or an autobiography is up to you.
How much do your services cost?
Short story collections usually cost around $1,500. The cost of editing and design services varies depending on the length of the manuscript and the amount of editing required. The range for these services usually starts at $2,000. Full-length memoirs are more expensive and depend on the scope of work and amount of travel involved.
How long does it take to complete a memoir?
Your availability, our schedules, the amount of material to be covered, and the extent of our revisions affect how long a project takes. The most important factor to me is your happiness with the book, and we will work together until you are thrilled with the finished product. On average, memoirs take a year; story collections take a couple of months; and editing and design services take from one to six months.
Can I self-publish my memoir?
At the end of your work with me, you will have a polished, professional work that is ready to publish. I offer basic production of a small number of copies for your personal use. If you would like to self-publish, I can direct you to plenty of resources that make the process quite straightforward. Depending on the type of product you want (e.g., hardcover or e-book), self-publishing can get expensive, and you should decide if you’re willing to devote the time and resources to that undertaking.
